What is a “Voxel”?

The dictionary says “[a voxel is] the three-dimensional analogue of a pixel: a number representing some numerical quantity, such as the colour, of a volume element in three-dimensional space

But I think this is a much cooler way to tell it (ignore the “pixel” text in the video – it’s all wrong. They are voxels. VOXELS I tell you!) :
